ContourHD with Garmin Edge 305 overlay
This is a clip from my first ride using the ContourHD camera. The camera was strapped under the saddle using tie wraps (just a temporary thing), i’m waiting for a handle bar mount from dogcamsport.co.uk. A tie wrap was rubbing my leg which can be heard in the audio. Notice the cadence sensor is not working, I think the battery requires replacing.. The software for the overlay still needs some bugs ironing out, the overlay here is created using a Java application on an apple macbook…

this video bring the term crotch shot to a whole new level
It’s Sack Cam!!! Cool app I should add.
Thats awesome! congratz! Do you think its possible to do that on a motorbike?
Great with the display aswell
Just watched your video… very impressive…
The camera in this video is strapped under the seat via tie wraps etc… nothing professional. But it works really quite well, i guess that body mass helps with stability..
I haven’t released my software, i struggle to find much time to work on it.. its likely i’ll release it for free.
very cool video, are you sharing your software?
I used a commercial program to do the same: PGdyp6Is_6s
What camera mount and position are you using for this point of view? are you doing anything special to reduce vibration?
thanks
I should say though, that all the calculations I do (Vecenty’s Forumla + Altitude considerations) is much more accurate than GPS can be.
And it’s not excuse for anyone to make low accuracy calculations just because they have low accuracy data :p
Still curious how you sync overlay/gps to the video, by eye? starting at the same time? some cue?
GPS isn’t very accurate anyway, and because distance can be “jittery”, speed wont be good either, except for constant speeds and averages. Of course the wheel speed sensor is going to be more accurate (when wheel size is correctly calibrated).
Start cycling before you get a GPS fix… you’ll still get a speed, even if you spin the wheel inside it should show you speed…
What I find sucks, is that speed from the sensor is not added to the TCX, so we are left to only use the rubbish gps speed.
Yes its essentially a transparent background….
I also have not been happy with the accuracy, its okay for people just using the training centre software but not for what we are doing…
I suspect if GPS is disabled so speed/distance is read from the GSC 10 then it’ll be more accurate… i guess this would be embarrassing for garmin though if this turned out to be true..
Okay so this is a “transparent” background video over another video?
Do we know if the Garmin units caluclate speed over gps positions correctly(alt+vincenty) if we don’t have a CAD unit to give us wheel speed/distance?
(I really do bang on about accuracy :p)
My current s/ware is written in java and uses the apple QuickTime java api to render the video files… it makes it quite easy to do (this is on mac osx)..
For distance and speed, i use the ‘DistanceMeters’ in the XML file. I don’t calculate this for lat/long… I average this over a few readings to avoid spikes in speed. Then I interpolate values over each frame.
The gauge video is overlayed on the camera video using the chroma key function in the final cut express video editing software..
Ah sorry I clicked “all comments” and saw one of yours.
So you are creating a “video” with vobsub? I was considering something like that after I sorted all the base stuff for mine.
So process is – video > gps/overlay > burn > post process > encode?
Above when I say distance, I mean distance thus speed, not everyone has CAD unit or a Garmin for TCX. GPX doesn’t have wheel speed and it needs to be calculated, I need to check my TCX to see if they enter wheel speed directly into the file.
Hi mate.
I’m working on something like this myself, at least the basics to start with (getting the calculations sorted and accurate).
Curious to know what you are using (libraries etc) to get this overlay, and what process start to finish (mine so far is not good enough).
Few Questions
What forumla are you using to calculate distance?
Are you calculating based on altitude?
How do you sync your video to gps stream?
I have a video at ueFfZs5ztrw (I have more info but don’t display it all).
Cool! pecker cam
Excellent , so how can one get your application? Could I do this using a garmin rhino530hcx?
Pen ieye view with PTZ
so this is what your penis would see during the ride? what’s this view called?
Have you ironed out the bugs yet.
Nice vision from the camera. I think i will have to upgrade.
rofl @ nuts cam
but nice gauges overlay
LMAO !!!!!
so this is what my nuts r like wen im ridding a bike
nice overlay……..any chance i could get it?
Any chance of a beta release ?
excellent…. i had the same comment at work ‘crotch cam…’….
