It does require an SD card to store map and waypoint data. They are cheap ($20) for a 2 gig on Amazon or NewEgg. You can record waypoints every 5 seconds if you like, or 5 meters, making it very good for finding your way back.
I’m looking at this model and another from a different manufacturer.
can this unit be used without the sd card? and does this have a back up memory? I heard it has no interenal memory so how can you save waypoints? would you lose them if you turn the unit of?
I want it mainly for hiking and hunting not to worried about using it in the car. I dont know alot using them but just want to make sure i get a good one and i won’t get lost. so its easy to back track with this?
Sorry, for being unclear. It was given to me as a retirement gift, but there was not the $100 US map. I could not find commercial maps for South American Roads except Brazil. A websitesite provided a free map of just Columbia which I finally got loaded on the memory chip. I may try some more after seeing you use it to actually give road directions . Or I may still try to sell it and buy a mini-notebook to take on my bicycle tour. Thanks
I was all set to unload my gift Garmin 60CSx for my bicycle trip in South America. I had gone to a seminar on the Garmin and all they talked about was bread crumbs and returning to your car. The video shows me I can get directions on roads if I can get a map. That was unclear and makes me think it might be more than a white elephant for my bicycle tour.
The previous user might be looking for it for the device may contain information about his tracks. It is very difficult to sell this device, since it has ID number and if the previous user registered this device for free (what most users do) if you sell it to new person and he founds out that the device belongs to somebody else you could be charged for stealing it. The user will be you owner if you return to him. Contact landlord or Garmin
Thanks for posting this. Just ordered one. Have you done any side by side comparisons between the 60Csx and lower end units with built-in antennas. The antenna turned out to be one of the selling points for me since I’ve had trouble with other units in certain places where I expected to be able to get a signal.
Great vid, but I’d recommend using a tripod or some stand to keep the camera still and give you an extra hand to demo with. The movement is pretty distracting
I believe I have the North America map package, which includes US, Mexico and Canada. They are pretty explicit about what their map packages contain. So check their site to be sure.
I am using a 2GB card, and it fits on there. May not fit the whole world on it, but you can at least fit a continent on there. I think there was a firmware upgrade recently that allows 4GB cards to be used. Google around to find out
Awesome, thanks for the fast response! I will mostly be using it for mtn biking/hiking/geocaching so I doubt I would use that function too much. Also you stated you use the US maps. Do they (garmin) screw you over by charging for US and then more for Canada, Europe, Asia… etc? I do a lot of traveling and would hate to have to spend hundreds more on the detailed maps. And are you able to fit all the US maps on internal memory? I have some old 2gb mini sd’s I could use, hopefully all would fit
It notifies you if you of a nearby waypoint by displaying a message on the screen. I think it beeps, but you won’t hear it on a motorcycle. One thing I don’t like is the lack of headphone capability (at least I’m not aware of this capability). In the end, I think the visual notification is good enough though
You have to pay extra for the extra maps. They are kinda pricey, but they have been very accurate on all my trips.
Thanks for the video, I am thinking of getting one. A question, you mentioned that it would notify you if you got within X miles of a saved spot. How does it notify you? Is there voice capability for directions. I don’t think I saw a 2 way radio, so that is probably a negative on that question. And the upgraded maps, have you been able to find any online for free or do you have to pay extra for them still. Thanks again for a great overview!

I’m not sure what you mean. What is it you are trying to do, and what do you think the Garmin can’t do?
