nüvi 1490T’s intuitive interface greets you with two simple questions: “Where To?” and “View Map.” Touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It comes preloaded with detailed City Navigator NT street maps, nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs), 2-D or 3-D maps and the speed limit for most major roads. I bought the Garmin 1490T model and will be returning it, due to the constant poor satellite reception, frequent dropped satellites and extensive time spent with the unit trying to acquire satellite contact. I’m not sure in the end what was wrong with its reception, but it’s not worth the time or money to investigate when there are so many other decent competitively-priced models on the market.

Have been using this GPS now for about 2 months. I have to say I absolutely love it! I am a service technician so my job is traveling place to place servicing the equipment I work on. I’ve been finding different ways of getting to places that I didn’t know before. I haven’t had a problem at all with satellite signal(Garmin is the best being they use government satellites) and my route is sometimes very rural.If I happen to miss a turn, which I sometimes do on purpose, the rerouting is very quick. 99% of the places I have punched in it has found with no problem. I haven’t updated the maps yet, but I’m sure when I do it will be that much better. The volume is loud and clear. I have mine set to 50% which is plenty loud. The voice is clear and crisp, no problem understanding it. The add service is no bother at all, it only comes on when you are stopped for a period of time. I haven’t used all the features of this device yet, but I’m sure I will be quite satisfied with them. Anyone looking for a great GPS, I would highly recommend this one.

I generally discount extremely negative reviews because I think some unfortunate soul just got a rare faulty item. However, I have just suffered the same fate that many others have reported with the 1490. I bought this unit fromn Amazon. First problem: Whenever I turned it on it asked me to enter my country, language, and whether I accept the terms of the software. I had to repeat this EVERY TIME I turned the unit on. I downloaded all of the most recent software and maps which took more than 1 hour on a fast broadband fiberoptic cable modem. Still had the problem. Took the unit outside. It knew the general region that I was in, but it would not acquire satellites. Moreover, annoying ads kept popping up in the middle of the device that obscured my ability to see the vehicle symbol. The unit would not navigate. I have no choice but to return the unit. Why does Amazon keep selling these defective things???

I think you guys are being a little tough on this product. I travel a lot for my job and have a terrible sense of direction and have always struggled with maps, pulling over to the side of the road, asking directions and questions,etc,ad nauseum.
When I have rented a vehicle I have used the Hertz Never Lost and knew that I wanted to get around to getting a GPS.
Well, I decided to buy this product and am very happy. I am over 50, and don’t have the best eyesight, so I can’t overemphasize how pleasing the SIZE of the screen is. No squinting to see minuscule details, everything very clear on the screen.
Linking to my cell phone an absolute breeze. I use the friction mount which I am very pleased with as opposed to the dashboard mount.
Also, adjusting the settings on this device is very, very easy, this is a user friendly device.
As others have pointed out, the inability to alphabetize destination searches is annoying, but this is a minor quibble.
Bottom Line: A premium product, a premium price, a wonderful visual display, and a very user friendly product with a few features that are slightly annoying.
If you don’t mind the price and an easy to use large screen GPS is important to you, I believe you will be very happy with this product.

This GPS is as close to perfect as possible. With such a large screen, manipulation is easy and self-explanatory. Spoken directions give proper warning, and the named streets on the map will clear up confusion on tricky corners. The Bluetooth connection works very well. The only issue I have is that caller’s names will not always appear on the incoming call window. Also, if there was a way to include text message reading, that would be extremely useful while driving.
Other than that, I’ve already used this to guide me half way across the country and love it!
