Having issues with my Garmin Nuvi 1490T. When I turn on my car, the device keeps rebooting. 11/6/09: Called Garmin support. They said it’s a known issue, to mail it in for repair and they may have it turned around in 14 days. I ask for an exchange and they said “They don’t do exchanges, but repairs for this issue”.

Don’t ever send it in for repair- they actually give you another person’s repaired one.
If or when it’s me, I think that I would rather have it repaired by garmin rather than get an exchange because if they exchange it, then you could be getting another unit with the same issue.
I agree, mine does the same thing and all I have to do to make it work is move the usb plug a little, slide it back some or push it in. It’s a poor design really, in my opinion because in order to take it out of the car and go in the house with it, you have to unplug it. I think that the plug will wear out in time because of this. The way the old ones are designed are better because they snap into place and an actual mechanism holds it in place.
I think your problem might be a physical issue. With my new Nuvi 1250, I think the mini-usb connection goes in and out, causing the unit to cycle on and off. Bad design–no solution I can find as yet.
try reinstalling the latest firmware again, i still have to reinstall it on mine twice before it finds satellites normal speed
just bought one 2 days ago. Worked fine until I updated it. Now, it does the same thing. Tomorrow I’m calling support line. If they can’t help me I’m buying a tomtom. My 3rd Garmin and every generation gets worse.
Totally worthless Garmin. Same thing happens to my 255W. And their technical support is terrible, always 30+ minute wait times.
Going to iPhone nav apps.
Buy it from a retail store like Best Buy and get the insurance plan. Its worth it in case anything happens. If you buy it from on line, you get the basic warranty and then the manufacturer. It really sucks when the manufacturer says “We don’t do exchanges!”
Mine did the same thing. Got steadily worse to the point where it wouldn’t turn on at all. Thankfully I had purchased a protection plan from Best Buy. Exchanged it and was on my way in under 5 minutes. Now updating and dumping in all the favorites took quite a bit longer, but fingers crossed this one won’t have the same issue!
