You need a Garmin GPS models comparison if you want to buy the right system for your needs and budget. Although all Garmin products are known for their quality, the prices range from less than $100 to over $300 for a vehicle GPS system. That’s a big difference. Not everyone needs the higher end products, either. For many people, the lower priced models will suffice just fine. In this Garmin GPS Models Comparison, we’ll take a look at three Gamin nuvi models from the lower, middle, and higher ranges.

Garmin GPS Models Comparison: Budget Models

Garmin has several budget models around $100. Let’s take the nuvi 205W, for instance. Not only does the nuvi 205W have the wider screen, but it’s got a host of improvements over Garmin’s nuvi 200 series as well. For instance, Garmin now has a predictive technology, which results in the device recognizing where it is faster and locking into the satellites faster. What this basically means is the device will start working faster once you turn it on.

Garmin GPS Models Comparison: Mid-Range Models

Garmin’s nuvi 755T currently sells for just under $200. It has a ton of great features, like a wide screen, text-to-speech (actually says the names of the streets you’re to turn on), and has FM transmission capability. One thing that I really like are the “where am I”, “where is my car” features. With one tap on the screen you can activate this feature, which lets you see where you are in relationship to the world around you. Also, when it’s removed from the mount on the car, it marks that position. This lets it remember where the car was so that it can show you later on. If you’ve ever lost your car in a large parking garage, I’m sure you can see the benefits of this.

Garmin GPS Models Comparison: High-End Models

No Garmin GPS Models Comparison would be complete without mentioning the Garmin nuvi 1690 4.3-inch Bluetooth navigator with nuLink. Of course, it’s got all the bells and whistles. And it should, considering right now it’s going to set you back about $400. But in addition, it’s got nuLink, which gives you real time information about wherever you are with a subscription.

So, we’ve covered three representative models in this Garmin GPS models comparison.

The Garmin Forerunner GPS watches are without doubt, the most advanced GPS sports watches on the market today.

By linking to a network of satellites, the Forerunner watches can accurately measure speed, pace, distance and elevation above sea level. Garmin’s unique approach intertwines the power of GPS, with advanced and practical sports watch features that let you measure and recording sports performances in an intelligent and intuitive way.

But what are the similarities between the six Forerunner watches on the market? and more importantly, what are the differences?

Two Generations of Forerunners

For the purposes of this discussion, we consider two “generations” of Forerunner watches. The “older generation” includes model numbers: 101, 201 and 301, which have now been superseded by the 205, 305 and 405 models – the “current generation”.

How Forerunner Watches are Similar

All Garmin Forerunner watches are all-in-one GPS wrist units, meaning the GPS aerial is mounted in the watch.

This is quite distinct from other GPS watch manufacturers such as Timex, Suunto and Polar, who require you to secure an external GPS device to your body. With Forerunner watches, you can just put the watch on your wrist and you’re ready to go.

The Garmin watches also share some amazing proprietary sports watch features. Some are only found in certain models, but most are present in all Forerunner watches. Below is a summary these shared features:

Virtual Partner Feature

The Virtual Partner feature lets you train against a digital person, displaying if your virtual “competitor” is “ahead” or “behind” you.

Auto Pause/Auto Resume

Pauses and resumes the stopwatch time based on your speed. If you need to stop running at a traffic light for instance, the watch stops the stopwatch timer automatically.

Auto Lap

Similarly to Auto Pause, the Auto Lap features automatically records your current “lap” and starts a new one when you have run a specified distance.

Simple Workouts

Lets you input time, distance and calorie goals and workout against them.

Pace/Speed Alert

Triggers an alarm if you vary from preset pace. You can set “Faster than” pace alerts and “Slower than” pace alerts.

Time/distance Alert

Triggers alarm when you reach a certain time or certain distance. The alerts can be set to trigger once, or repeat over and over.

Interval Training

Lets you set up exercise and rest intervals. Intervals are flexible and can be set to distances or times.

Customizable Screen(s)

The Forerunner watches display a variety of real-time data as you are performing a workout and allow you to set up customized screens.

The Differences

Now we will explore the differences in the Forerunner watches, both in terms of the differences between “generations” as well as how individual watch models within generations differ.

Older Vs Current Generation Differences

Chipset

The major difference between generations is the GPS chipset. Put simply, the current generation of watches are far superior at picking up the GPS signal, drop the signal less frequently and are more reliable in terms of accuracy than the older generation watches.

Memory Storage

Surprisingly, the older watches store an incredible 5000 laps in their memory, whereas their modern counterparts can record “only” 1000 laps.

Features

The current generation Forerunners support the Courses feature (that lets you compete against previous workouts). The older generation does not.

Simultaneous Data Fields

The older generation Forerunner watches all display three real-time data fields. The 205 and 305 watches display four. The 405 has a smaller screen and only displays 3 however.

How “Older Generation” Watch Models Differ

The 101, 201 and 301 watches all look very similar, but there are some large distinctions between them.

Heart Rate Monitor

The 301 is the only older generation Forerunner watch that supports a heart rate monitor strap.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer

The 101 does not support PC data transfer, the 201 connects to PC via a serial port, whereas the 301 connects via USB

Power Supply

The 101 uses 2 AAA batteries to power the GPS signal. The 201 and 301 both use internal, rechargeable batteries.

Features

Only the 301 supports “advanced workouts”, “sports profiles” and “auto scroll”.

Note:

Advanced Workouts allow you to create custom goal-oriented workouts.

Sports Profiles are workout modes that cater specifically to the type of sport you are doing (running, biking and “other sports”)

Auto Scroll is a feature that cycles through data pages in real time.

How “Current Generation” Watch Models Differ

Now we look at the current generation, from the older 205 and 305 units to the recently released 405.

Heart Rate Monitor and External Devices

The 305 and 405 support a HRM and optional foot pod devices, the 205 does not.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer

All watches support data transfer via USB, but the 405 transmits wirelessly to an ANT USB stick.

Looks and Form Factor

The 205 and 305 look identical (besides their color). They are large, bulky and rectangular shaped face. The 405 looks more like a real watch.

Simultaneous Data Fields

The 205 and 305 display 4 data fields, the 405 displays 3.

Map Navigation

The Forerunner 205 and 305 support GPS navigation features. The 405 does not.

Touch-Sensitive Bezel

The 405 can be controlled by tapping a bezel – a “ring” around the watch face. The 205 and 305 do not.

The latest Forerunner watches offer better signal reception and a few more modern features than the older generation models, but as you have seen the watches still deliver a lot of bang for your buck and are generally much cheaper.

When I got bitten by the GPS bug, I decided to compare GPS systems to see which would be the best for me. I only had a vague idea of what these remarkable devices did. I knew they were essentially electronic maps, but I had no idea how they worked, or what was important to look for when buying one. So, I decided to do some research.

My first stop was Amazon to check out their best sellers. (Just click on my link below to see the same information.)

I quickly saw that Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom dominated the market. Garmin, I had heard of-Magellan and Tom Tom, I had not heard of. My elation at seeing who were the best sellers for GPS units was soon crushed by an overwhelming sense of confusion as I clicked on each item, read its description, and tried to make heads or tails out of the differences between the units.

There must have been some pretty big differences, I thought, because the prices ranged from a low of about $150 to almost $1000 for portable units-the kind you can stick to your windshield and remove to take with you when you’re out of the car.

Well, suffice it to say, I did an enormous amount of research and became an expert of sorts.

To save you some time and frustration, let me tell you the basics of what I found out.

Although there are several manufacturers of portable automotive GPS systems, the three main ones are Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom. Garmin sells about half of the automotive GPS systems in the world, but Tom Tom is quickly catching up. All three companies make a good product, it’s just that understanding the differences between the three manufacturers and their specific products is a little difficult.

Garmin has two main lines of automotive GPS systems, the Nüvi and the StreetPilot. The functionalities of each line overlap quite as bit, so does their price.

In general, the Nüvi’s are sleeker, more compact units. Their interface (how you use the system) is not quite as straightforward as the StreetPilot’s interface. Garmin Nüvi’s come in a broad price range, from less than $200 for the Nüvi 200 to almost $1000 for the Nüvi 770. Per price point, Nüvi’s generally have a few more features than StreetPilots.

The main difference between the Nüvi’s and the StreetPilots, however, are these-according to Garmin, Nüvi’s have a high-sensitivity receiver, whereas StreetPilots do not. Nüvi’s weigh about half as much as StreetPilots. (None of these units is heavy, just StreetPilots weigh almost 10 ounces, where Nüvi’s weigh slighlty more than 5 ounces.

The biggest difference between the two units is the user interface. The StreetPilot “c” series was made expressly to be very intuitive and user friendly. This is not to say the Nüvi’s are not, they’re just not super simple, like the StreetPilots.

Tom Tom has devices that directly compete with Garmin’s. The Tom Tom One, for instance, is comparable to the Garmin Nüvi 200, Garmin’s entry level product. Both are basic GPS systems which come pre-loaded with maps, have touch screen, and voice instructions. The Tom Tom One has a battery with only 2 hours average life, where the Nüvi’s battery will last an average of 5 hours.

To my mind, the Tom Toms are not quite as sleek looking at the Nüvi’s, although their quality seems to be comparable.

Magellan does not have the market share of Garmin or Tom Tom, but they still build a good product. The Magellan Maestro 3100 is a big seller on Amazon. In both price and features, it’s comparable to the Tom Tom One and to Garmin’s lower priced units, both in size and weight. Magellan says their battery lasts up to three hours, fifty percent better than the Tom Tom’s.

One of the biggest differences between the cheaper GPS systems and the more expensive ones is the number of “Points of Interest” in the unit’s database.

Points of interest are preloaded hotels, restaurants, business locations, hospitals, basically anywhere you might like to go, which are included in your devices database. The Magellan Maestro, for instance has 750,000 points of interest. The Garmin Nüvi 200 comes with approximately 6 million!

If you’re going to use your GPS for traveling, having more points of interest available might be a key feature, and when you consider the distances involved, 750,000 items is just not that many.

Another feature I think is important is Bluetooth technology. Your higher priced units can work as a cell phone (both making and receiving calls). It’s hard enough (and even illegal in some areas) driving and talking on your cell phone. Add looking at your GPS to that mix, and…well, you might want to pull to the side of the road. To my mind, the fewer devices to keep up with the better.

There are a few things you have to consider when you have chosen to buy a used or older model rowing machine. The decision to purchase a used or older model rowing machine is usually due to financial constraint as the latest models are priced at the higher range. Budget aside, it is essential that you get the best deal for the type of rowing machine you are buying.

New rowing machine will come with the newest features but you can look for an older or used rowing machine with all the fundamental features to serve you basic needs. As mentioned, the choice of a used or older model machine is saving on cost but you need to approach the process of buying one with a bit of common sense. When you are setting out to buy a used or older model rowing machine, chances are that you are not as informed initially unless you are familiar with the universal characteristics of the rowing machine. Aside from just purchasing the rowing machine, there is a need to buy a rowing mat, as constant rowing will scratch the floor.

Financial consideration aside, you can still get a pretty decent used and older model rowing machine with the necessary features to serve your purpose and that can means saving up to a few thousands dollars. It is best to be as informed as possible about the newest models rowing machine as many new features are constantly added to it so when you set out to buy the used or older model rowing machine. The first thing you have to ensure is that it has all the features to meet all that you require to burn off the calories as well as adding lean muscle mass.

On choosing a used and older model rowing machine, there are many choices out there and the model has been in the market for a certain period so you can be sure that it has been tested out over time and gone through many reviews. With this advantage, you will know how to check the functionality and its suitability to select one that is closer to your needs.

Even though it might cost less, you have to ensure that the used or older model rowing machine serve you and the types of activities you are going to carry out. If you still can’t make up your mind on the type of rowing machine to choose and perhaps decided not to go ahead to purchase one, then a visit to the local gym where they have a selection of different rowing machines. That might be a better solution than just getting a used or older model rowing until the time comes when there is one that truly suits you.

There are a few places that you can choose the right rowing machine for your needs and the usual place is to look at the classifieds of your newspaper or Craiglist on the Internet. To check out and examine the rowing machine is a great idea, as it will save you a lot of headaches later on. To get one instead of shopping online will save you the cost of shipping. In addition to, you can look for it at the flea markets and garage sales for any bargain used and older model rowing machine.

It is necessary to check the rowing machine for all its parts as well as getting a demonstration if possible or at least try it out yourself. It is also important to check the age of the rowing machine as the older it is, the more likely that it will be faulty in no time. As well as, find out if it has been repaired and look out for any recent paint jobs or ill-fitting screws. These are typical actions used by previous owners to cover up any defects.

Used and older model rowing machine can be purchased online too on such sites like ebay and there are other online sites selling such machines.
